Does a Vasectomy Increase Risk of Prostate Cancer?
by: Jonathan Ling
Many men are concerned that if they have a vasectomy they may be at an increased risk for prostate cancer. What does the research really show? Is there a strong correlation between vasectomies and prostate cancer?
Over 50 million men throughout the world have had a vasectomy, one of the most common methods of contraception for men. This is a very common procedure for men over the age of 35 (almost 17 percent of men over 35). Doctors perform over 500,000 vasectomies annually in the United States alone!
A vasectomy procedure is a very simple outpatient surgery procedure that involves blocking or severing the vas deferens which delivers sperm to the semen. Semen without sperm cannot impregnate a woman. Usually the procedure can be performed in the physician's office without the need to visit a surgery center. Only a local anesthetic is necessary and some men even choose to watch as the procedure is performed! A vasectomy is a safe, low-risk, low-cost contraceptive procedure.
Because the number of vasectomies performed is so large, researchers are concerned if there is a link between vasectomies and prostate cancer risk. If vasectomies are related to an increased risk of cancer in the prostate, then the world needs to prepare for a prostate cancer outbreak!
A Small Hint Of Risk Associated Between Vasectomy And Cancer Of The Prostate
In the medical community a vasectomy is considered a low-risk medical procedure with very little cause for concern except for infection control issues associated with any outpatient surgical procedure. However a few decades ago, a handful of large medical research studies were performed. When the data was analyzed there seemed to indicate a small, but significant positive correlation between vasectomies and cancer of the prostate.
Looking Closer At The Link Between Vasectomy And Cancer Of The Prostate
In 1993 a conference was held by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Developement to further investigate the link between vasectomy and cancer of the prostate. All data from the large studies as well as published and unpublished data was thoroughly reviewed by the researchers.
Their determination? The research results were inconsistent. They went on to explain that they could not give any biologically viable reason for why vasectomies could cause cancer of the prostate. However, to be on the safe side, they concluded by saying that even if a vasectomy does increase prostate cancer risk, it is an extremely small risk.
Since 1993 other scientific research panels have come to the same conclusions. The National Cancer Institute held a committee meeting in 1997 to review the most updated cancer research and they concluded that the correlation between prostate cancer and vasectomy was weak.
Even today researchers are still examining the potential correlation, but very little has changed in over a decade. There is \no real association between vasectomy and prostate cancer\" according to Dr. David Chen
